Blues, jazz and barbecue on River Street’s plate

POSTED: June 5, 2014 10:56 p.m.

Deep southern blues, smooth jazz and smoky barbecue will be served up all weekend long during June First Friday and Saturday on historic River Street.

The Savannah Waterfront Association will host its second annual Blues, Jazz & BBQ as part of “Savannah Blues Weekend” on June 6-7.

“Last year drew record crowds for a first year event. This year we added more to the most popular components; music and BBQ,” said Carrie Bligh, executive director of the SWA.

Live entertainment will take place on the Rousakis Plaza Arbor Stage, featuring eight regional blues and jazz performances.

“Our headliner for Friday night is the AJ Ghent Band that has been opening for Zac Brown’s tour. Jacey Falk is headlining on Saturday evening along with his nine piece band, which consists of a fantastic horn section,” continued Bligh.

Savannah Blues Weekend includes the following events:

• Blues on Broughton: Friday from 6-9 p.m. This free concert is hosted by the Savannah Downtown Business Association.

• Art and Blues in City Market: Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. This inaugural event will feature live painting demonstrations and blues music throughout the day.

• Blues, Jazz & BBQ: Friday from 4-10 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. First Friday Fireworks presented by Wet Willie’s will begin at 9:30 p.m.

The SWA, SDBA and City Market have teamed up to host the “Rhythm & Art Project” benefiting Heads Up Guidance Services. HUGS is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization funded by community donations and operated by local volunteers. This organization is committed to providing services to Chatham County’s underserved population without using taxpayer dollars.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this community project,” said Bligh. “Thirteen guitars, which have been decorated by local businesses, will be displayed around Broughton Street, City Market and River Street.”

Guests are encouraged to visit each of the areas around downtown and enjoy all that Savannah Blues Weekend has to offer.
