Representatives from the Fox Theatre Institute in Atlanta met with Gussie Nease, part of the effort to restore Springfield’s Mars Theatre, on July 4.

Adina Alford Erwin, assistant general manager, and FTI director of restoration Molly Fortune discussed grant opportunities and other assistance that could be available for restoration of the Mars.

The Fox Theatre Institute is the only comprehensive theatre preservation organization in the United States. The goal of The Fox Theatre Institute is to assist other historic theatres in Georgia with operations and restoration needs by sharing and leveraging the assets of The Fox Theatre.

The Fox Theatre Institute has worked closely with the DeSoto Theatre in Rome after that theatre’s vestibule was damaged through a roof leak. The FTI also worked with the Ritz Theatre in Brunswick to restore its windows to their original 1899 appearance.

With Movie Theater now in Pooler and abundance in Savannah, the Mars Theater will have to have unique movies that fill a certain niche. Other wise it might turn into a taxpayer supported boondoggle. My wife remembers fondly the movies in the fifties at Mars. But that was another time with mostly “B Movies.”
