Fireworks and Independence Day go hand-in-hand, and Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies want all citizens to enjoy a safe and fire-free July 4th celebration.

Georgia law bans the possession and use of fireworks in the state. The Georgia legislature has defined illegal fireworks as any object that propels itself or a projectile — such as bottle rockets and roman candles — and any item that produces a report (“bang”) — such as firecrackers and bottle rockets. Generally, any type of sparkler, sparkling shower and whirling shower items are permitted under Georgia law.

The ECSO also would like to remind the public to not use celebratory gunfire in the county, as a stray bullet can be deadly.

The Traffic Enforcement Team will be out participating in Operation Zero Tolerance focusing on removing impaired drivers from the roadways.

Deputies will be out in for force this holiday to ensure everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July.
