DOT to suspend lane closures for the holiday

POSTED: December 20, 2012 8:09 p.m.

The Georgia Department of Transportation anticipates heavy traffic during this Christmas and New Year’s holidays. So that motorists can better enjoy their travels through southeast Georgia, the Georgia DOT announced that construction-related lane closures on all interstates and major state routes will be suspended beginning Friday at 5 p.m. and continuing through midnight Jan. 1.

“We anticipate heavy traffic over the Christmas holiday week and we would like to make it a little easier for motorists to arrive at their destination in a safe and timely matter,” said Karon Ivery, Georgia DOT district engineer in Jesup. “Emergency maintenance work in case of traffic accidents and other unpredictable types of transportation incidents could still cause lane closures and/or delays.”

Check the maps on www.georgia-navigator.com for current road conditions, or call 511 on any phone for free, real-time traffic information. Traveler information is also available at www.511ga.org and a toll-free number for callers from outside the state, 1-877-MYGA511 (1-877-694-2511).
