City ready for ‘bigger, better’ July 4 laser show

POSTED: February 17, 2014 8:15 p.m.

Rincon City Council members are gearing up now for the city’s annual 4th of July celebration.

Council members approved a contract with Peachtree Laser for this year’s Independence Day laser show at a cost of $17,800, with perhaps having the show June 27 and 28.

“It’s going to be bigger and better,” said City Manager Wesley Corbitt.

Peachtree Laser is one of the top laser show producers in the state, city planner LaMeisha Kelly said. Corbitt has suggested holding it on a Saturday to attract an even larger crowd.

“We started working on the laser show after last year,” she said. “This will take it to another level.”

The company has the weekend blocked off for the city, in case the city and the company decide a second show is feasible. The show itself is about 20 minutes long, and Peachtree Laser also may provide the city with more sponsorship opportunities.

“We’ll be able to have 12 logos, maybe more this year,” Kelly said.

Peachtree Laser will provide its own 45 foot by 50 foot inflatable screen upon which to direct the beams. The wind and its effect on the screen last year was a problem, Kelly noted.

“If it wasn’t for ‘McGyver,’” she said, referring to city public works director Tim Bowles and his hasty repair job at last year’s show, “it wouldn’t have happened.”
