Josh Reddick capped his first year as a full-time starter with one of baseball’s most prestigious postseason awards.

Reddick, the former South Effingham High School star, was named a Gold Glove outfielder Tuesday, becoming the first Oakland Athletics outfielder to be so honored since 1985.

“It’s a true honor to be in this category with everybody here and to represent the Oakland A’s, who gave me this opportunity,” Reddick said in a conference call earlier this week, according to mlb.com. “I’ve always taken pride in both sides of my game and tried to be that complete player who not only does it at the plate but can help save those runs. You never know what play, whether it’s in the first inning or the ninth, is going to save a ballgame.”

Reddick had 15 outfield assists and turned three double plays. Playing predominantly in right field, he compiled a fielding percentage of .982.

Reddick also led the team with 32 home runs and 85 runs batted in. He also topped the A’s, who won the American League West, in hits and doubles.

He was third in the majors in outfield assists, trailing only Jeff Francouer (19) and Alex Gordon (17) of the Kansas City Royals. Reddick was tied for ninth in the majors in most double playsby an outfielder.
