Reddick, Rincon Rec to host home run derby Saturday

POSTED: January 18, 2013 4:29 p.m.

The city of Rincon’ s recreation department and big leaguer Josh Reddick are teaming up for a home run derby Saturday.

Reddick, the Oakland Athletics star outfielder, and the city will be hosting the first Josh Reddick Home Run Derby at Macomber Park.

The connection between Reddick and the city’s rec department started in his youth and continues today — his dad Kenny continues to work as an umpire at rec games. Josh Reddick’s first rec league game was on field 1 at Macomber Park.

“He wanted to give back to the community,” said Rincon Rec Director David Wooten. “I’m grateful for anything they can do. He thinks enough of the community to want to come back and help.”

Reddick, who won an American League Gold Glove for the 2012 season as one of the circuit’s top defensive outfielders, will hold an autograph session from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Autograph seekers are limited to one item each to be signed.

The home run derby will begin at 11 a.m. and the cost is $10 to enter. All proceeds will go to the Rincon Recreation Department. Categories are as follows:

• 10-12-year olds on Field 4 (157-foot fence)

• 13-15-year-olds on Fields 1 and 3 (200-foot fence)

• 16-18-year-olds on Field 2 (300-foot fence)

• Adults on Field 2 (300-foot fence)

First and second-place winners in each age group will receive a trophy.
