Mark Tanner from Rincon participated in a six-week Science and Technology Expansion Program (STEP) this summer at Armstrong Atlantic State University. As an entering freshman to Armstrong, Tanner conducted research on nanoparticle catalysis of environmental pollutants. He lived on campus free of charge and received a weekly stipend of $300.

“Incoming freshmen interested in a career in sciences or mathematics have an opportunity to conduct paid summer research before the start of fall classes,” said Dr. Delana Nivens, Armstrong associate professor of chemistry. “Students who are academically qualified and have an interest in pursuing research can gain valuable hands-on experience working with professors and upper class students on challenging projects.”  The National Science Foundation provides funding for the program.
