The Effingham County Extension office has a delightful aroma permeating from its office in Springfield. The recent success of the Holiday Classic and other such 4-H-sponsored food events has created a “hunger” within its young membership.

“Popular cable shows consisting of chefs competing in food wars have become a new sport of sorts, even among our kids,” said Connie Heidt Rahn, 4-H program assistant.

Recently, the 4-H program decided to incorporate a cooking club for its Cloverleaf members (fifth- and sixth-graders), which meets once a month after school.

4-H’ers are educated on kitchen safety, food group recognition and the importance of portion control. Also, 4-H’ers are given simple but creative ideas on holiday decorating.  “Presentation is everything” and “You eat with your eyes first” are things  Rahn wants all the children to understand.

In addition, 4-H’ers are encouraged to experiment by using a “hands-on” approach in food preparation. The dishes prepared range from healthy snacks such as fruit shish kabobs to veggie pizza.

For more information regarding the 4-H program, call 4-H agent Abby Smith at the Effingham County Extension office at 754-8040.
